  15. <p>     DIED. JOHN PENNEL, 53, pole vaulter; of cancer; in Santa Monica,
  16. California. As a youngster, Pennel practiced vaulting over garbage
  17. cans with a television antenna. In March 1963 he set his first
  18. world record of 16 ft. 3 in. using a then revolutionary fiber
  19. glass pole, and later that year he became the first man to clear
  20. 17 ft. His personal best came in 1969: 17 ft. 101/4 in., another
  21. record breaker.
