- <p> DIED. JOHN PENNEL, 53, pole vaulter; of cancer; in Santa Monica,
- California. As a youngster, Pennel practiced vaulting over garbage
- cans with a television antenna. In March 1963 he set his first
- world record of 16 ft. 3 in. using a then revolutionary fiber
- glass pole, and later that year he became the first man to clear
- 17 ft. His personal best came in 1969: 17 ft. 101/4 in., another
- record breaker.
